Esztergom - Basilica

Meet your local guide at the pier and take a little “off the rails” train uphill to the impressive great Basilica, dating back to 1001 when a previous church was built in its place by Stephen the 1st of Hungary. Today it is the mother church of the catholic church in Hungary and seat of the Arch Bishop. The current basilica was consecrated in 1856 with a concert composed and conducted by Franz Liszt. Enjoy a live narrated tour of the Basilica’s interior, including the treasury and crypt where the remains of a beloved Hungarian activist are buried.

Duration: approx. 2 hours, Visit of the treasury and crypt involve many uneven stairs up and down with no alternative elevator.

 

Esztergom - The Danube bend excursion

This trip will take you away from the river to enjoy the best view onto the famous Danube Bend from high above and enjoy lunch in a local restaurant with a spectacular view before rejoining your fellow travelers on the ship in Budapest. You will visit the Esztergom Basilica with live narrated tour, admission to treasury and crypt are included in this tour. After visiting the Basilica you will take a bus tour to Visegrad to see the ruins of the ancient royal castle and to enjoy the most spectacular view on the Danube Bend, or the “knee” as the Hungarians say. Here you will enjoy a three course lunch at a local Hungarian restaurant before moving on to Szentendre. After a walk tour through Szentendre, a picturesque artist colony with a well preserved Old Town, you will have opportunity for some shopping and discovering local art on your own before traveling by bus to the ship in Budapest.
